In the multilateral arena, Kenya has continued to advocate for predictable and sustainable African-led peace support operations. During a high-level briefing convened by Dr. Donald Kaberuka, the African Union High Representative for the Peace Fund, Kenya joined other Troop Contributing Countries (TCCs) and development partners to discuss funding options for the proposed African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) — the successor to the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).
Kenya’s intervention at the forum underscored the need for clarity, sustainability, and ownership in funding peace operations. With over a decade of investment in regional peace and security — both militarily and diplomatically — Kenya has consistently pushed for mechanisms that move beyond ad hoc donor-driven funding to more predictable and domestically anchored peace support financing.
As ATMIS phases out, Nairobi is keen to ensure that gains made in stabilizing southern and central Somalia are not reversed. AUSSOM, if effectively structured and financed, offers an opportunity to consolidate the security transition, deepen state-building, and provide the much-needed buffer for Somalia’s fragile federal system to mature.
